The first reference to Cantabria was made at 195 b.C by a Roman historian. This region was the last spanish region to be conquered by the Roman Empire and required the personal presence of the Emperor Augustus Octavian to carry it out, who founded the city of Castro-Urdiales (Our city).
When the Roman Empire fell, Cantabria regained his freedom but just for about a hundred years. In the year 574 Cantabria was overrun by the Visigoths (Barbarians of northern Europe) and did not have autonomy until 1983. During the Middle Ages Cantabria resisted Arab conquest attempts which had conquered most of Spain. After a lot of year, in 1983, after Franco's fascist dictatorship, Cantabria was recognized as an autonomous region.
